Our 3 Cents - WrestleMania Backlash 2021

Welcome to our second year of Our 3 Cents where myself, Jesse, and Lonnie give you our predictions on what's going to go down. We're coming off the heels of WrestleMania and WWE has changed Backlash to be WrestleMania Backlash. It appears Smackdown is giving us fresh match-ups where Raw is running with rematches. We're starting off with a clean slate. So here we go!

John: 0-0

Lonnie: 0-0

Jesse: 0-0

Let's take a look at the card:

Lumberjack Match

Damian Priest vs. The Miz w/ John Morrison

Jesse: With the continuation from the tag match at WrestleMania, I’m not going to lie, this has been a fun feud. I haven’t been the biggest fan of Priest dating back to his NXT days, but he has impressed me recently. I know some of that is a result of Miz, who I feel is underrated at this point in his career. Look at everything he has done since he came into this business, and he made a rapper look good on the biggest stage of them all. I think this feud continues, so Miz wins.

W: The Miz

Lonnie: In the past month or so Priest has four wins against Miz & Morrison (Mania, Miz once, and Morrison twice. I am not really sure what Priest should/will move on after this current feud, but I am hoping that after the multitude of wins he already has and hopefully a win here in a stipulation match that this is the end of his battles with Miz & Morrison. Miz is entertaining and the use of the lumberjacks should make this enjoyable if it is kept relatively short.

W: Damian Priest

John: WWE seems to be high on Priest right now as he got the celebrity rub at WrestleMania but teaming with Bad Bunny in a match that exceeded everyone's expectations. For better or worse, I'm a believer that Miz can take however many losses and it won't effect his current role on the roster. It's not a knock on the guy. I'd say it's giving him props because he still finds a way to make himself relevant no matter what he's doing, Miz inadvertently cost Morrison a match on Raw and I think it's possible that Morrison could "accidentally" cost Miz here. Even if he doesn't, I like Priest to get the win and continue his momentum.

W: Damian Priest

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match

Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode (champs)

Jesse: Why was this match not at WrestleMania? How big of a moment would it have been to have the Mysterio’s win the tag titles then? I just don’t get it, especially after how dull Ziggler and Roode’s reign has been. Mysterio’s win and there will be a celebration at Lonnie’s house!

W: Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio

Lonnie: These teams have only been involved with each other for the past two weeks and in both weeks the Mysterios have picked up wins. While I do think it would be pretty quick for a title change, I also know deep down that WWE is going to let Rey win the championships with his son at some point. Since I am not picking any other title changes tonight, I unfortunately think we will get one here. Another classic case of Rey using family to get a championship.

W: I can’t bring myself to write their names........But yeah, new champs.

John: To be honest, I'm surprised that Ziggler and Roode are still champs. I was almost certain that the Street Profits would of won them back by now (on the Smackdown before Mania). However, he we are and they still have the gold. We have the Mysterios looking to make history by becoming the first father/son combo to win the tag titles. In my opinion, there's not much left for Rey to do in the business but this could be the last big moment for him that puts the cherry on top of his career so to speak. I think Rey and Dominik win the gold for the feel good moment.

W: Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Raw Women's Championship

Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka vs. Rhea Ripley (champ)

Jesse: Why is this match a triple threat? Why does WWE treat Asuka like crap? WHY IS CHARLOTTE IN THIS MATCH? I can see this going down in 2 ways, Rhea pins Charlotte to look strong......which could have happened in a one-on-one match. Or Charlotte pins Asuka so she can have the title and not make Rhea look weak. I think I’m going with option 1, but Rhea’s reign won’t be long because Charlotte will keep coming for it…..unless the beautiful and talented Alexa throws a wrench in everyone’s plans.

W: Rhea Ripley

Lonnie: First off, these triple threats need to end. It seems WWE has forgotten how to have a one-on-one match that makes both competitors look good so they have just decided to lean on the crutch of a triple threat match so they can have someone take the fall and the other two look good. It just reeks of lazy storytelling. Ok, rant over. As I am sure many of you agree, I am sick of Charlotte always being in the title matches. That said, I do think the last month has been some of the better character work that she has put in in the last few years. Ultimately they have kept Rhea strong this past month and I think it is too soon for her to lose the championship. They will want Rhea and Charlotte to look good so Asuka will be the one taking the pin. The only fear I have here is that Charlotte wins so she can have another title reign to help her catch her dad’s record (Will it really even mean anything when she passes his record but her total days as champ sucks because she has had so many really short title reigns?).

W: Rhea Ripley

John: Oh boy! I can't say I was over the moon excited for a Ripley/Asuka rematch. Their Mania match was good in my opinion but I just wasn't clamoring for a rematch. However, I'm even less excited for Charlotte to be added. I know Charlotte gets a lot of heat for always being in the championship seen and it's warranted to some degree. I guess I'd just like to see her feud with someone for once without the championship involved. When has that happened? Has it ever happened? Maybe she's the one Alexa Bliss and Lily have their eyes on? Please don't let Charlotte punk Ripley out again. At the end of the night, I'd like to see Ripley hang on to the gold as I think it's too soon for her to lose it.

W: Rhea Ripley

WWE Smackdown Women's Championship Match

Bayley vs. Bianca Belair (champ)

Jesse: Bayley is another case of what the heck is WWE thinking. She was one of the best parts of WWE during the pandemic, and they reward her with a small segment and getting beat up at WrestleMania? Now she has made this feud entertaining and helped make Bianca feel legitimate, but sadly she is going to get beat. Hopefully they will continue this, and maybe cap it off with a match at SummerSlam.

W: Bianca Belair

Lonnie: Ok ok, I know Bianca has been great since the Royal Rumble, but can we all just take a minute to appreciate how amazing Bayley has been recently! Instead of losing the championship and fading away, Bayley has been so entertaining and has kept herself relevant the last several months and it pays off here as she is back in the championship picture. I think we can all agree that we do not expect Bianca to lose the championship this soon, but we all do expect a good match. WWE having Bianca move away from Sasha to Bayley was so smart as you know Bayley can tell a story with the best of them and make Bianca look great in the ring. It also leaves the option of having Sasha come back later in the summer for a rematch.

W: Bianca Belair

John: Bayley is a great first challenger for Belair. Bayley is great on the mic and will be able to deliver in the ring. I'm not saying Belair still needs to be carried in a match but I do feel like she's still missing something to go to the next level. Maybe it's here promos? Bayley should be able to make her look great in this match. Much like Ripley, I think it's way too soon for Belair to lose the gold. I don't think this feud is necessarily over, but I think Belair should retain here.

W: Bianca Belair

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship

Drew McIntyre vs. Braun Strowman vs. Bobby Lashley (champ)

Jesse: My portion of 3 Cents is brought to you by the phrase, “What is WWE thinking”. Why is this match a triple threat? If the event is called WrestleMania Backlash, just have a rematch of McIntyre and Lashley. Don’t just throw in Braun for some randomness. There is a small part of my mind that thinks this match might be sneaky good though, but I doubt it. Lashley retains, and I think we are headed towards something big for him for SummerSlam.

W: Bobby Lashley

Lonnie: I feel like they have done every combination of singles matches between these three men over the last month. In none of those matches was Lashley beaten cleanly (pin/submission). The amount of DQ and count out finishes is insane. Based one what I have seen they clearly still have Lashley as priority #1 and I expect him to walk out of Backlash as champion. If I had to guess, I think we are headed towards Lashley/Strowman after this so I see Drew taking the fall. Regardless, I want the championship feud to be down to two men.

W: Bobby Lashley

John: When the match was scheduled to be Lashley vs. McIntyre, I was torn on who was going to win. I didn't like the idea of Lashley losing yet but I thought McIntyre taking another clean loss could hurt him. When Strowman was added, that told me Lashley should retain. Lashley can get a "cheap" win without making either opponent look weak in the process. I could see either McIntyre or Strowman getting a one-on-one opportunity after this.

W: Bobby Lashley

WWE Universal Championship Match

Cesaro vs. Roman Reigns (champ)

Jesse: Roman’s reign has been one of the best in the past 20 years. His heel work is amazing, and having the Uso’s, his own family involved has elevated it to a new level. Now saying that Cesaro finally getting recognized as a legitimate star and performer is refreshing, and shows why Smackdown is so much better than Raw at this point. Should Cesaro get a shot at being Universal Champ? Yes! Will it happen here? No. Roman wins what I feel like will be an amazing match, but will have a weird finish due to the Uso’s.

W: Roman Reigns

Lonnie: I have to say, Roman continues to be the best thing about WWE. His promos are fire and as we saw with his Bryan match, he is at the top of his game in the ring as well. What they are currently doing in this feud is so good. You have Cesaro challenging after beating Rollins twice which makes perfect sense. You have the return of Jimmy and the drama between Jimmy and Jey as they try to figure out their roles. You have Rollins hanging around the edges of the championship scene ready to slip back in when needed. Just amazing storytelling all the way around. While I am glad to see Cesaro get this opportunity there is no way he walks away as champion here. I am not saying he will lose as I feel the new Jimmy dynamic could lead to Cesaro getting a DQ victory. However, I am going to play it safe and pick Roman to win in a match that I feel will have plenty of Uso involvement and lead to another match next month.

W: Roman Reigns

John: I love Cesaro and am glad he's getting this opportunity but it's just not his time. Everything Reigns touches right now is gold. His promos and matches are some of the best of his career. There's no reason to stop all that just yet. The Usos dynamic is interesting now that Jimmy is also back. I suspect both of them will get involved in some way. I expect this to be a banger and if it delivers like I think it should, I'm hoping Cesaro gets another opportunity in the future when he has a more realistic chance of winning. Cesaro is just the right guy at the wrong time at the moment. Reigns should retain to continue this run.

W: Roman Reigns
