Our 3 Cents - SummerSlam 2021

Welcome to our second year of Our 3 Cents where myself, Jesse, and Lonnie give you our predictions on what's going to go down. It's time for the "Biggest Party of the Summer" and WWE seems hell bent to make this show feel bigger than WrestleMania. Without further to do......

John: 19-5 (79%)

Jesse: 17-7 (71%)

Lonnie: 16-8 (67%)

Let's take a look at the card:

Alexa Bliss vs. Eva Marie w/ Doudrop

Jesse: Think back to when The Fiend and Firefly Funhouse first started and how enjoyable and unexpected it was…and now it has brought us to this. I enjoy Alexa and everything she has brought to the character, but it’s nothing without The Fiend. I’m going to go with Eva Marie winning so hopefully Alexa can take a bit of time off and come back without this gimmick.

W: Eva Marie

Lonnie: Alexa has been awesome for months, and Eva Marie has been awful for years….. And I truly mean years!!!! I feel bad for Doudrop for the name they gave her and that she even has to be involved with Eva. With all the other women in WWE the fact that Eva is pushed frustrates the hell out of me. It probably won’t be, but let's hope this is a squash and Alexa picks up a good win.

W: Alexa Bliss

John: Alexa's gimmick is definitely love/hate. Many will say it's run it's course and they may be right. However, she's openly said she enjoys doing it so I don't expect it to go away anytime soon. Eva Marie, on the other hand, has been terrible since coming back in my opinion. Don't get me started on Doudrop and how they've dropped the ball with her. I'm hoping Bliss squashes Eva in quick fashion. Eva will then somehow blame Doudrop for the loss.

W: Alexa Bliss

Drew McIntyre vs. Jinder Mahal (Veer & Shanky banned from ringside)

Jesse: I will start this off by saying I am proud that Jinder has a match on SummerSlam. The past months Drew has been hindering Jinder and not letting him through to his full potential which is a reign as WWE Champion. I’m sure that Drew is going to do something to cheat in this match like make the fans raise their hands or use his stupid giant sword in order to get a cheap victory *insert rolling eyes emoji*. Drew wins and I don’t like it.

W: Drew McIntyre

Lonnie: If WWE wants to truly welcome the fans back, they will give them what they really want, a Jinder Mahal victory!!! Don’t Hinder the Jinder! However, this is WWE we are talking about so we are unfortunately headed for a McIntyre win. I think after him losing to Lashley recently, they are using this Jinder feud to build him back up and keep him near the title scene even though he can’t challenge Lashley again. There is always at least one match on the card that will disappoint the fans with the wrong winner and this is it at SummerSlam.

W: Drew McIntyre

John: This is simply a rebound feud for McIntyre after being removed from the WWE Championship picture. Without his goons, I don't see Mahal winning this one. Let's all hope we get a 3.....2.....1.......CLAYMORE!!!

W: Drew McIntyre

Edge vs. Seth Rollins

Jesse: Hands down, no questions asked this will be match of the night. This match has had a build that feels like it should be for a title, or at least the main event a PPV. Seth’s character work has been an absolute masterpiece, and add in that Edge can still go in the ring makes this the most anticipated match of the night. As much as I want Seth to win and go on to fight Reigns, I don’t think Edge can take another lose. Edge wins an entertaining match that proves he still has that in ring magic.

W: Edge

Lonnie: The seeds for this match started to be planted months ago and I am so excited to see this one. Edge can still go with a good opponent, and Seth may be the best in the WWE at the moment. From an action and storytelling perspective I expect them to hit a home run and I wouldn’t want to follow them. When this match was first announced I assumed Seth would win because he is around all the time and they might want to move him into the title picture. But then I started to think, Edge has not won a major match since his return (Yes, I know he won the rumble, but I am saying a normal match). I feel Edge needs a win here more than Seth and feel a face win would be good as I don’t see it happening in the championship matches.

W: Edge

John: How could you not be pumped for this one? For the first time in a while, WWE has tried some long term storytelling with this one. They've taken it back to 2014 when Rollins had an opportunity to stomp Edge but didn't. Edge can still go against a good opponent and Rollins is more than that. I feel Edge needs the win more here because what has he won since he returned? Only the 2021 Rumble and WrestleMania against Orton. He lost the 2020 Rumble, Backlash to Orton, WrestleMania 37 triple threat, and to Reigns at Money in the Bank. Edge needs the win more in my opinion but I don't necessarily think the feud ends here.

W: Edge

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship Match

AJ Styles & Omos (champs) vs. RK-Bro

Jesse: This match proves all that is wrong with Raw; 3 of the top 5 stars on the show are in a tag title match (sorry Omos) that is pointless in the long run. As entertaining as the RK-Bro storyline has been, at this point it is dragging to a screeching halt, and I feel they are going to win the titles just to continue wasting their time as a tag team. On the other hand, I think AJ will go on as a singles guy again and have a run at Lashley, but I’m not sure if Omos will continue to be in his corner. RK-Bro will win and entertaining but pointless match.

W: RK-Bro

Lonnie: This is a tag team match but it is really about the one on one dynamic of RK-Bro. Styles and Omos feel like placeholder champions to me. They are respectable and no one questions them as the champs, but they also have not really done anything spectacular with the championships the last few months. As I’ve said before they need Styles to lose the tag championships to make sure he gets one last major singles run soon in case he retires in the near future. This would mean RK-Bro would be the champs. This would allow their friendship/implosion to continue over the next few months before Orton turns on Riddle for good, setting up a big match for the two of them. I am not usually a fan of tag titles being used to tell a singles rivalry, but here I actually think it makes sense and I also think RK-Bro continuing is a smart merchandise move as well.

W: RK-Bro

John: Styles/Omos have been serviceable as tag champions but I wouldn't call them great. In all fairness though, until RK-Bro, I could of only seen the Viking Raiders as possible options to defeat them. Once they beat them, who's left? Inset RK-Bro! Riddle has been fantastic over the past few months and Orton is Orton. This team has been one of the bright spots of an otherwise brutal Raw. I think RK-Bro will win the gold and that sends Styles back to singles action. Unfortunately, I don't know one that means for Omos unless he hangs around Styles to be his muscle.

W: RK-Bro

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match

Dominik & Rey Mysterio vs. The Usos (champs)

Jesse: Uso’s aren’t losing the titles so soon after winning them, that’s all I have to say about that.

W: The Usos

Lonnie: I thought there was no way The Usos would win last month after Jimmy’s DUI. So I made the stupid mistake of picking the Mysterios. If the Usos can win right after that bad publicity, then there is no way in hell they will be losing here. And I have learned to never pick the Mysterios in any big match….. Well any match.

W: The Usos

John: As long as the Bloodline is in control of things on Smackdown, the Usos should keep the titles to keep them strong. Usos should win a good match.

W: The Usos

WWE United States Championship Match

Sheamus (champ) vs. Damian Priest

Jesse: When Damian Priest first came to NXT I wasn’t a fan, but like I have said before he has really grown on me. I mean as the first person to have a perfect 3 Cent’s on NXT thanks to Priest winning the North American Title, how could I hate the guy? I really think he wins the title here and brings new life to the mid card on Raw.

W: Damian Priest

Lonnie: If the last year has not made you respect Sheamus more I don’t know if you’re a true wrestling fan. While he might have flown under the radar, Sheamus has been very consistent and entertaining. That said, I do think Damian Priest is going to beat the old veteran here. Many NXT call ups have gone sideways and ended in disaster, but Priest was lucky enough to get the “celebrity” treatment with Bad Bunny at WrestleMania and it seems to have worked in his favor. Based on Vince pushing him at Mania, I feel confident that Vince will allow him to continue his rise and pick up a championship victory here.

W: Damian Priest

John: Sheamus has to be one of the most underrated and underappreciated performers in the business. People in the right places seem to have taken a liking to Priest and it's refreshing to see a former NXT talent used well on the main roster. I expect Sheamus to do the honors and make Priest look great in a physical brawl. Expect this to be a hard hitting slugfest. Priest walks away with the gold.

W: Damian Priest

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Raw Women's Championship

Charlotte Flair vs. Nikki A.S.H. (champ) vs. Rhea Ripley

Jesse: All that I can say about the Raw Women’s division is just to throw my hands up in the air with disgust. I appreciate Nikki’s character and get where she is going with it, but she cashed in the MITB briefcase in a very heel way, then lost the next week. How is that suppose to make a champion look? Rhea has been stagnant ever since being on the main roster, and Charlotte has been… well Charlotte. Nikki wins this because any other outcome will make the women’s division look even more dysfunctional.

W: Nikki A.S.H.

Lonnie: Becky wins in a fatal four way!!! Oh wait…. I have to pick the actual match, crap! So many issues. 1. This was the second year in a row the Women’s MITB became champ the very next night on Raw. 2. Most of Charlotte’s championship reigns are garbage. 3. Nikki becomes champ and then is made to look awful the very next week. 4. Nikki then wins over Charlotte. Yay, finally something good. 5. Nikki loses this past Monday to Rhea. This means the champ has lost clean to both challengers in a 4 week span. This never happens to any champ and makes Nikki look so weak. With all these issues in mind I think it is clear they used MITB to make Charlotte have a short reign to get her closer to Ric, they don’t trust Nikki on this big stage so the triple threat will heavily rely on Rhea and Charlotte to make it watchable, and Nikki is not leaving as champion. I say we have a bad match that Charlotte wins and then Becky shows up post match so that we all forget what we just had to watch.

W: Charlotte Flair

John: There are so many things wrong with this. Nikki is beyond weak as champion. Rhea has always been made to look like Charlotte's bitch. Charlotte has the most championship reigns but what does it really mean when she barely holds the championship. At this point, her reigns are shorter than most 24/7 championship reigns now days. If Nikki loses this, she'll probably never win the championship again. One could hope they don't give it to Charlotte to boost her reign count. It wouldn't surprise me though. I'm hoping against hope and predicting Nikki somehow pulls off a win. I'd love for her to pin Charlotte but let's be real; Rhea is probably taking the fall.

W: Nikki A.S.H.

WWE Smackdown Women's Championship Match

Bianca Belair (champ) vs. Sasha Banks

Jesse: Once again, this rematch just proves that WWE needs more women stars. I know Bayley got hurt and Becky had a kid, but a rematch of WrestleMania so soon? I do think Bianca’s reign hasn’t been the best, but she hasn’t had ideal opponent’s either. I’m not going to sugar coat it; I think Sasha wins in order to face a returning Becky in the near future.

W: Sasha Banks

Lonnie: As we all watched their WrestleMania match, we knew that we were going to get a rematch. We didn’t realize Sasha would be gone for a while, but I actually feel that has kept this rematch fresh and I cannot wait to see it. The build on Smackdown has been eh, but honestly they could have announced the match out of nowhere and I’d be in. While I still think Sasha is the face of the Smackdown women’s division, I think Bianca should retain the championship here. I feel it is important to show that Mania was not a fluke and that Belair is a top flight star (which Smackdown needs in the absence of Bayley). This match may not live up to Mania standards, especially if it does not get enough time, but I expect a good match still.

W: Bianca Belair

John: WWE sure does like to WrestleMania rematches at SummerSlam in the same year don't they? We've seen it with Orton/Taker (2005), Rey/Eddie (2005), Lesnar/Reigns (2018), Taker/Edge (2008), Lesnar/Rollins (2019). Sometimes it comes across as lazy booking. This time, Banks is the best choice for Belair because Smackdown's women's roster is lacking. Belair hasn't really done it for me as champion. I'm not sure why but something doesn't click. I'm not sure if it's her character or what. I could see this one going either way but I think they'll stick with Belair. I don't have a solid reason. Just a feeling to be honest.

W: Bianca Belair

WWE Championship Match

Bobby Lashley (champ) w/ MVP vs. Goldberg

Jesse: I use to love Goldberg when I was growing up, now I hate every time he shows up. If he could have a decent match then I wouldn’t mind, but him coming out saying “You’re Next” then all he does is spear someone or injure them is tiring and why the ratings are so low. Lashley wins and I hope he comes out injury free.

W: Bobby Lashley

Lonnie: While I am personally not a fan of this match, I get why it is happening. WWE views this Summerslam basically as a WrestleMania because they now have fans back. Whether we like it or not, that means this show is built to draw in the casual fan and get them to buy Peacock, not for the diehard fan that is going to watch no matter what. Goldberg sells and brings in the casual viewer so here we are. I am hoping this turns into a 5 minute tops impressive Lashley victory. My only other hope (fingers crossed) is that Goldberg does not even get to attempt the jackhammer and potentially hurt Lashley. I also would not be surprised if Gabe Goldberg gets involved and lays the foundation for a future career.

W: Bobby Lashley

John: Here's to hoping Goldberg does the same thing he did at the Rumble which is make the current champion look good. We don't need another Goldberg/Fiend fiasco. Lashley needs to continue looking like badass beast. Hopefully this last three minutes or less. Do the right thing Bill!

W: Bobby Lashley

WWE Universal Championship Match

Roman Reigns (champ) w/ Paul Heyman vs. John Cena

Jesse: Cena has been a breath of fresh air on the mic for Smackdown. I appreciate what Roman has done with his character, but he is still too scripted in my book. Cena has run laps around him with each promo and I wish he would come around more with is IDGAF attitude, but unfortunately, I don’t think he will. Roman is going to win, then Cena will go for the respectful handshake after the match, only to be beaten down by Roman and The Uso’s, with the night ending with Roman saying “Acknowledge Me”.

W: Roman Reigns

Lonnie: Like we all know John Cena is amazing on the mic, but did anybody else forget just how good he is? We must all admit that Cena was stale by the end of his WWE run, but now that he is back and feels fresh it is truly nice to just soak in how good he is and appreciate that he is a real legend. While I said all that about Cena, we should also say he's facing a future hall of famer in his own right in Roman Reigns. Weeks ago when Cena returned I was 100% sure Roman would win as Cena was coming back for a one time match. But I am honestly starting to doubt myself on it. Cena has shown up on more shows than I expected (and was reported to be backstage at more) and truly seems like he might be willing to commit to staying around a bit. And if he is willing to show up, there is no reason he can’t win. Also, I just feel a Cena win would be great media headlines and freshen up Smackdown. All that said, it has wavered my confidence in Reigns, but I still think the head of the table will pull it off. The fan in me hopes I miss this pick though.

W: Roman Reigns

John: This is definitely the biggest match WWE could do for SummerSlam. The names alone sell this match without any build. Both Reigns and Cena really brought it on the mic last week to give this feud a more personal feel. As someone who will be attending SummerSlam, I'd love to be live in person when Cena wins a historic 17th world title. I'm just not sure if it's going to happen. It'll depend how long he plans to stick around. Reigns is close to a year long reign with the gold and part of it doesn't feel right to take it away now. I also thought about Ric Flair leaving WWE after asking for his release. Would WWE have Cena break his record? It's possible I guess. I think Reigns winning is the safe bet and therefore my pick. I'd gladly be wrong though in order to see history live.

W: Roman Reigns
